We sat down with Aaron Antis, Director of Sales to talk all things...rain!
Q: Are we expected to have rains this year like we did last year?
Aaron Antis: What I have read indicates that we are likely to have a cooler than normal winter and an above average rainy season. My feeling is we “balanced out” of our 7-year drought and returned to normal rainfall. Home owner’s associations (HOAs) would do well to realize that last season’s rains were probably not a single event. The indicators suggest that it’s better to be prepared.
Q: When do we usually get the first rain in OC? IE? LA?
AA: The rainfall comes at about the same time for all 3 counties. We can usually bank on some rain in October, although sometime it comes earlier as happened last year. It is hard to predict, but associations should always prepare for the worst-case scenario and managers can educate their boards.
Q: Why should we schedule a roof maintenance now? (Infers September/October)
AA: Checking for leaks needs to happen when it’s still dry to ensure that waterproofing companies complete maintenance work in time. Those that try to wait until the last minute in October often are waiting with hundreds of other associations for the same service.
Q: What does a maintenance cover?
AA: A roof maintenance addresses all visible voids and openings on a roofing system (and often extends to other roof integrated and accessible systems like stucco and chimneys). We review and repair any broken tiles and shingles, slipped tiles, open pipe penetrations, open z-bar flashing, and openings at gravel guard joints.
Q: If I am an existing customer, are you sending me something?
AA: If you have worked with, or requested a proposal from Antis in the past few years, you will receive a proactive proposal detailing out the items that need to be addressed in a maintenance or cleaning. Antis takes our role as community informants seriously and we like to get our customers the information in timely manner.
Q: If I am a new customer, how do I get a proposal?
AA: I recommend you contact our office. Our customer service department will gather the necessary information to provide you with a proposal, and your designated account representative will reach out to discuss recommendations.
Q: What if my board is very cautious about spending money but the roofs are old? What is the worst that can happen?
AA: The worst case scenario can vary from community to community. At minimum, we recommend an association be inspected so the board can be made aware. This will protect managers and board members from accusations of negligence. Our proposal puts the information in front of you so the association can make informed decisions.

Our Antis champion for this week is Ms. Teri Jo Cherry.
Teri Jo or TJ as we like to call her, is the engine of our company. Having spent over 20 years working in production and operations roles, TJ has been with us for the past three years as Business Operations Manager. Working closely with the senior team, she (like most of our team) wears many hats. As someone who has a wealth of knowledge and experience, she is invaluable to the continuity of our company.
“I enjoy my job but I enjoy the people even more.”
It was when she was looking for a career change when TJ came across Antis. While working as a property manager, she saw Antis (one of her vendors at the time) as a company that she wanted to work for. From the outside looking in, TJ saw potential and possibilities with us that she couldn’t find elsewhere. Our company culture is what attracted her the most.
TJ previously worked for companies with similar goals, structures and ethoses. The working environments were often tense, and focused more on individuals rather than collaborating as a team. Given her experiences working for traditional companies that focus on turning a profit, TJ valued our focus of turning a profit while making a difference in the local community.

Then I list them off! Most people say what a great company and it must be fun to work there, and they’re right, It is!”
Looking to the future, TJ hopes to get more involved in our social efforts.
“I have been to two Habitat for Humanity OC events. The second time I made sure to take my young niece and nephew. Because we (Antis) installed the roofs over homes that were dedicated by Habitat, I felt extremely humble and proud that the company I work for gave such a great gift to several well-deserving families.”
No two days are the same for TJ, things are constantly moving and her willingness to learn and adapt to situations has helped us tremendously. She finds structure in our sometimes unstructured world.
Shauna Levine, Senior Campaign Manager at the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), stands at the forefront of efforts to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma. Beyond its focus on providing critical funds to develop advanced treatment methods to challenging illnesses, the organization, through its Light The Night campaign, serves a compassionate partner and resource to patients and their families. After learning of the Light The Night campaign and meeting with Shauna, we are determined to help this critical human fight. We have committed time and effort to the campaign, focusing on how best we can support survivors of these diseases.
Shauna welcomed the opportunity to work with us as a traditional sector company with modern approaches to corporate social responsibility. We’ve always tried to lead by example with our community efforts, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has helped us diversify our portfolio of partners.

Shauna and the society continue to educate us on the importance of advocacy in cancer research. We realize and understand the impact blood cancer has on patients and their loved ones. Give us a bit of background into you, the Light the Night campaign and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
The mission of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
At Light The Night, it is our aim to bring light to the darkness of cancer through research and cures. Light The Night is a series of fundraising campaigns benefiting the society’s funding of research to find blood cancer cures. We bring hope instead of despair by working to ensure access to treatments for all blood cancer patients. We bring communities together to celebrate those who are fighting the disease and to honor those we have lost.
How did you discover Antis Roofing and Waterproofing?
I met with Antis Roofing through one of their partners, Cardinal Property Management. Charles and I connected on a deeper level at the very first meeting. His earnest commitment to leverage his business standing and company to advance the quality of life of all who come across his path was inspiring!
How has the company supported your organization in its endeavors?
They have donated money and time to the organization and also support survivors, who often struggle to get back on their feet after fighting these diseases. Charles and the team have also used creative solutions to help us expand our network of support. As an example, Antis donated tickets to their suite at the Honda Center for us to offer as incentives at Light The Night fundraisers. Beyond participation, we have structured a variety of cause marketing campaigns that advance both of our missions.
What role do you see Antis playing in the growth or development of your organization in the future?
The awareness they bring to our organization by talking to their clients about us is amazing. Beyond these traditional aspects of support, Antis and its team has helped me as a professional incorporate even more innovative solutions to our model and programs. They really get it.

A skilled carpenter by trade, Dave began his tenure with Antis as a field technician. After distinguishing himself as a committed team member and highly trained worker, Dave quickly moved roles within the company mastery many different responsibilities. Initially, Antis was an employer more than a path, but he quickly realized that Antis provides more than just a job.
Antis’ numerous career developing opportunities helped Dave realize his full potential. In a competitive job market, building and using transferable skills and experience are critically important for security. Beyond, provided employee growth opportunities, Dave thrived with a company culture that celebrated skilled labor and community engagement. Dave's willingness to adapt to sector changes and embrace the company culture has won the appreciation of management.

Dave cites the working environment at Antis as integral to his development. Failing and learning by working in various positions allowed him the space to amass a broad background of skills that lead him to a key position within the company. Dave’s transferable knowledge allows him to assist the Office Manager, give advice to an Estimator, and tend to his own job. This startup type mentality pushes Antis forward. Dave says of the company culture:

In keeping true to our O.C. roots, after 25 years in business, we're not ashamed to admit there's been a little nipping and tucking going around here. And while we're not talking Botox, collagen and lypo, this year we did redesign out website, update our brand image and pick up a suite at the Honda Center. We think the improvements turned out pretty good, but as everyone knows, it's what's on the inside that truly counts. That's why we'sre stepping up our game and improving the Antis experience even more with the trasnfer of two of our most seasoned construction management specialists, Victor Valadez and Frankling Dumas, onto the sales force. This transition will allow customers one-on-one interface with two of Antis's most knowledgeable team members and position us for aniticpated growth through 2014 and beyond.
